His name was Vic Maile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I learnt that Vic was in charge of the Pye mobile and didn\u2019t really do many studio sessions, however he always came in to remix his live recordings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was waiting in the remix room when Vic arrived, it felt a little strange to be working with an engineer that I hadn\u2019t met before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After I introduced myself Vic said, \u201cHi&#8221; in a quietly spoken voice, his manner appeared so gentle and laid back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He explained that we would be remixing a track from an album he had just recorded called The Who Live at Leeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pete Townsend arrived and I remember being star struck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from that I have no recollection of anything else about that session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wouldn\u2019t be long before Vic asked me to join the crew on the mobile truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"693\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IOW-Ferry.jpg?resize=700%2C693&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3008\" style=\"width:900px;height:891px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IOW-Ferry.jpg?w=700&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IOW-Ferry.jpg?resize=300%2C297&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/IOW-Ferry.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Alan Neville Vic &amp; Kenny. On The Isle of Wight Ferry Coming Home Everyone Shattered<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting to know Vic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was so easy to get along with we soon became great friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few months later we booked a caravan holiday down in Cornwall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allowed me to get to know him a lot better including his very unusual sense of humour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wrote and recorded several of his own songs in downtime at the studio, which were recorded by various artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As he played and recorded all the instruments himself, I offered to help out, knowing this would fun and be a good opportunity for me to learn even more about recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unique techniques<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He would start by laying down a bass drum track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was achieved using an AKG 224e wrapped in cloth, we then tapped the top of the mic with a finger and recording it onto quarter inch tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This would become the basic bass drum track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vic would record about one minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He would then edit out the best consistent eight bars, Join them together then thread the tape over the machine playback heads and put the tape on a reel and press play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This became a perfect in time loop bass drum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vic would then eq and compress the sound to make an amazing bass drum sound, which could now be transferred to the multitrack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was the first time I witnessed tape looping for instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would be many years later, I read The Bee Gees invented loop recording whilst making the album Saturday Night Fever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Kenny.png?resize=1024%2C572&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6816\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Kenny.png?resize=1024%2C572&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Kenny.png?resize=300%2C168&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Kenny.png?resize=768%2C429&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Kenny.png?w=1270&amp;ssl=1 1270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compressor used to make the sound. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most engineers would use light compression to control the sound of instruments, but Vic used compressors unconventionally to achieve a sound rather than just the effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example: <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On a cymbal, which has a standard splash sound, he would make a loop of a couple of cymbal crashes and spend sometime taking the compressor to its outer limits creating the most unusual percussion sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Percussion guitar.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guitar would be strummed only in downstrokes but right hand was held over the neck not playing a chord but just being held enough to create a vamping sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Percussion Piano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place a small cloth on your fingers, hold down any low \u2014 middle string inside the piano whilst hitting the relevant key on the keyboard in time with the bass drum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This now gave the bass drum harmonic feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He adored slide guitar and plenty of echo on the vocals, again everything had to be an effect rather than just a run-of-the-mill sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tricks of Vic&#8217;s Trade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, Vic would use many of his unconventional techniques on the great recordings he engineered and produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once a drum track was complete, Vic would always ask the drummer to overdub the snare with a very slightly opened hi hat and hit on every snare beat. This would ensure the snare sound, was crisp and sharp and unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best way to record handclaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For handclaps he would take two U67 Neumann mic boxes which were very sturdy and clap them together and overdub them a couple of times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This became the most rock solid handclap sound you could imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You will hear this on many of Vic\u2019s productions especially Tom Robison\u2019s 2-4-6-8 Motorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For an example <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Not Fade Away <\/em>is a good example of Vic&#8217;s unusual vocal sound and some of the unique recording techniques I mention above. Thanks to Neville Crozier for the copy of recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vic Maile (Not Fade Away) Bronze Release 1981\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1oEYgKWw4BY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meeting a Lord<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was leaving Pye one evening when Vic called in to return some microphones he had been using on the mobile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He mentioned he was going across to Grottie&#8217;s, Pye\u2019s local annexe Italian restaurant, to meet a friend and asked if I would like to join him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We had only been there for a few minutes, when Vic\u2019s friend Dave arrived.<br>He was a very polite quiet spoken guy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sat talking general chit chat mostly about music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we left, and Dave headed of to catch a train and Vic and I headed back toward the studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked Vic, if Dave was in the music business and Vic smiled and said, \u201cYeh, he\u2019s <em>Screaming Lord Sutch.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was stunned, this was the guy that In the 1960s, changed his name to \u201c<em>Screaming Lord Sutch III Earl of Harrow,\u201d <\/em>despite having no connection with the peerage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His act consisted of a horror-themed stage show, he dressed up as Jack the Ripper and would arrive at gigs by hearse, inside a coffin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also included chopping up a child\u2019s baby doll with fake blood exploding everywhere.<br>This pre-dating the shock rock antics of <em>Arthur Brown <\/em>and <em>Alice Cooper.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, when Alice Cooper stole his act, he swapped the doll to an effigy of Alice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Gotta Keep A-Rocking<\/em>&nbsp; was a single that Vic had produced with Sutch and <em>Hands Of Jack The Ripper <\/em> was a live album recorded by the Pye mobile, which they produced together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This album had <em>Keith Moon <\/em>on drums, <em>Noel Redding <\/em>on bass and <em>Ritchie Blackmore <\/em>on guitar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to shabby bunch of muso&#8217;s for the rhythm section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"738\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Lord-Sutch.png?resize=1024%2C738&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Lord-Sutch.png?resize=1024%2C738&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Lord-Sutch.png?resize=300%2C216&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Lord-Sutch.png?resize=768%2C554&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Lord-Sutch.png?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Screaming Lord Sutch<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Nomadic Jukebox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around this time, Vic purchased a wonderful old dial-up selector jukebox from me for \u00a335.00.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On arriving at his maisonette in Ruislip it soon became apparent it wouldn\u2019t fit through the front door. It was a real <em>Right Said Fred<\/em> moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no way this huge old Jukebox was going to move in with Vic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few weeks later I was with Vic and Dave Sutch and we were talking about the shenanigans with my jukebox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dave jumped at the chance to buy it from me and offered me \u00a360.00, he paid me in full there and then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked when he would like me to get it delivered to him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He replied,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI will let you know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About two months had gone by and not a word from Dave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I rang his home and asked what he wanted to do about the jukebox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This would be the second time&nbsp; I\u2019d be stunned in the short time of meeting Dave when he replied, \u201cSorry Kenny, my mum said I can\u2019t have&nbsp; it in the house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had no idea at that time he still lived with his mum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jukebox was once again on a nomadic trail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did finally sell it for \u00a375 to Malcolm Jackson the owner of <em>Jackson studio.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leaving Pye studios.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vic and I left Pye around the same time to work at different studios and I thought we would drift apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This in fact probably brought us closer together, we spent more time recording and mixing at <em>De Lane Lea studios<\/em> and more weekends together with Vic&#8217;s wife Lesley and my Sue having wonderful dinner parties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Baby Let&#8217;s Play House<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"568\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/vIC-25-mARCH-1973.jpeg?resize=1024%2C568&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6409\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/vIC-25-mARCH-1973.jpeg?resize=1024%2C568&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/vIC-25-mARCH-1973.jpeg?resize=300%2C167&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/vIC-25-mARCH-1973.jpeg?resize=768%2C426&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/vIC-25-mARCH-1973.jpeg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first recording I was involved with that gained a release with was,<em> Baby, Let\u2019s Play House.<\/em> Recorded on eight track tape in Studio 3 at De Lane Lea studios Wembley on the 25 March 1973, it was included on a compilation album of various artists called,<em> The Best Of British Rockabilly,<\/em> later that year, under the name of <em>Vic Maile &amp; The Faders.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vic Maile &amp; The Faders - Baby, Let&#039;s Play House\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gvDjOXyL3S8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>The Best Of British Rockabilly.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Introducing One Great Friend to Another<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the mid-seventies, I was being managed as a producer by another dear friend, Stuart Taylor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stuart had found me work as a producer with several record companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1979&nbsp;he signed my own studio band <em>Nostromo<\/em>, to <em>Bronze records<\/em> and I suggested to Vic that he should meet up with Stuie to see if he could present Vic to some record label\u2019s. He agreed to the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before to long, Stuart had introduced Vic to Gerry Bron and Vic had produced the single <em>Yeah Right<\/em> with the band <em>GirlsSchool<\/em>, followed by two other singles <em>Emergency<\/em> and <em>Nothing To Lose<\/em> along with the album <em>Demolition<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next band&#8217;s album Vic produced for Bronze was <em>Motorhead&#8217;s <em>Ace of Spades<\/em><\/em>, which was recorded&nbsp; between 4 August \u2013 15 September 1980.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The average royalty percentage for a producer in those days was 2% but I remember Vic holding out for 3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked Vic, if it was worth the fight for that extra 1%. He replied, &#8220;Well, that 1% is actually an extra 50%.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After that, I always held out for that little extra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"579\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Motorhead.png?resize=1024%2C579&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Motorhead.png?resize=1024%2C579&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Motorhead.png?resize=300%2C170&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Motorhead.png?resize=768%2C434&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Vic-Motorhead.png?w=1187&amp;ssl=1 1187w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lemmy, Vic and &#8220;Fast: Eddie Clarke &#8211; Motorhead session<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jackson recording studios <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The studios were once owned by the Jackson family who donated the building to the Museum after it was threatened with demolition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The studios, originally in Maple Cross, were used as a recording studio by Jack Jackson.<br>Jack was a popular bandleader during the 1930s and 1940s and later became a highly influential radio disc jockey, broadcasting on BBC Radio and TV where he coined the term <em>Auntie <\/em>referring to the BBC and became known as the \u2018father of DJs\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On his retirement, Jack handed over the studios to his sons, who, in the 1970s, set up a commercial recording studio that became renowned for its \u2018dead\u2019 sound.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many world famous artists recorded at the studios, including:<em> Elton John, Ian Dury, Eddie and the Hotrods, Dr Feelgood, Tom Robinson and the New Seekers, Girlschool <\/em>and<em> Motorhead<\/em> who recording their definitive track <em>Ace of Spades<\/em> there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was one of the first recording studios to provide overnight accommodation for artists. With the advent of digital technology, the studios went into decline and were eventually rescued by the Museum from developers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jackson Studio &amp; Vic <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 70s there was an urge amongst artists to record at a certain studio because another artist had just had major success recording there, this of course was a myth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would have bands bring me an album into the studio and say, \u201cI want the same drum sound as on this record.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would say, \u201cWell if we use the same drummer, the same mics at the same studio we might get close\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I first visited Vic at Jackson\u2019s my first impression was it was very underwhelming.<br>It felt really shabby and the old Neve desk looked like it had seen a lot better days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remembered, when I first saw Studio 2 at Pye in 1969, it too looked old and run down but had recorded almost every major artists of the 60s. So this is where the myth of the &#8220;hip&#8221; studio burst.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sun Studios in Memphis was at the back of a shop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joe Meek recorded his hits in his flat above a shop in the Holloway Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buddy Holly\u2019s early classic were recorded at Norman Petty\u2019s studio in Clovis, New Mexico and this was prehistoric compared to Sun Studios and Holloway Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The studio sound is created by the engineer and the recording the artist, whatever the studio facilities are like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vic was the secret to Jackson\u2019s success, he made it his and created hits with his passion and knowledge that he used in each and every recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hostess with the Leastest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years we spent more time together outside of work, meeting up regularly<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would get together for dinner almost every Saturday night, work permitting, with my girlfriend Sue and my wife to this day and Vic\u2019s partner Lesley, who he would later marry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lesley knew only to well Vic\u2019s odd sense of humour and was never offended when Vic affectionately called her \u201cthe hostess with the leastest.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we would arrive at his house, he would always have his Revox tape machine rocking through his massive Tanoy speakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it was morning or afternoon the music would be 50s Rock &#8216;n&#8217; Roll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it was in the evening the music mood would change to movie soundtracks like <em>South Pacific<\/em> or <em>Seven Brides and Seven Brothers.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I alway made some remark like, \u201cWhat would Motorhead or Dr Feelgood think if they arrived and heard you blasting out <em>Gonna Wash That Man Right Out Of My Hair<\/em> ?\u201d He would just turn and give you that little Vic smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vic and I spent almost every minute talking music, playing each other tracks we were working on or recordings by artist we wanted to introduce to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"963\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_9360.jpg?resize=963%2C726&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_9360.jpg?w=963&amp;ssl=1 963w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_9360.jpg?resize=300%2C226&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/IMG_9360.jpg?resize=768%2C579&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Kenny &amp; Vic Swedish Embassy party 1983<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not All These Evenings Went Perfectly.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I remember one night shortly after he had moved into his Bungalow in the village of Ivor, Bucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it was classed as a bungalow it had an added room upstairs, which Vic and Lesley used as the dinning area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vic had prepared a meat fondue dish and halfway through the meal he decided to pour some more oil into the fondue, this didn&#8217;t go well and it promptly burst into flames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a panic Vic picked up the whole thing and started running down the stairs trying to get out into the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately the flaming oil was pouring from the tray, all over his hands and leaving a trail of burning fire falling like rain as he was running through the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My wife Sue, I and Lesley were chasing after Vic dousing the flames as they hit the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A major fire was averted but Vic\u2019s hands were scared for life. Fondue, was never on either of our menus again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modesty Reigns <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 1977 Vic and Lesley were over at our house having dinner when I started raving about a track I had heard on the radio early that week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Vic you will love it, it\u2019s everything you love about a pop record, it\u2019s called <em>2-4-6-8 Motorway.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his totally loveable shy way, he said quietly, \u201cOh erm, I produced that\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been an all time favourite of mine to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I once asked him about a loud guitar bleep at 2:07 on the record and why he left it in. He had never noticed it until I pointed it out. From then on he would find things in my recordings and jokingly point them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hear that bleep every time to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was sad that Vic never lived to see the <em>Only Fools and Horses <\/em>episode <em>The Jolly Boys Outing<\/em> the 1989 BBC Christmas special, which featured the <em>2-4-6-8-Motorway.<\/em>  He would have been blown away, as <em>Only Fools <\/em>was one of his favourite programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"766\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Vic-Lesley-1982-.png?resize=1024%2C766&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4098\" style=\"width:840px;height:628px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Vic-Lesley-1982-.png?resize=1024%2C766&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Vic-Lesley-1982-.png?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Vic-Lesley-1982-.png?resize=768%2C575&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Vic-Lesley-1982-.png?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Vic &amp; Lesley Boxing Day 1982 at our little cottage  in North Marston Buckinghamshire<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vic Was One of the Most Patient People I Ever Knew<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was borne out when in the early 80s he contracted Guillain\u2013Barr\u00e9 syndrome, a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I used to visit him in hospital a couple of time every week. Vic was basically paralysed from the neck down. I used to feed him biscuits and read him chapters from rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked up the disease and discovered there was no cure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked Vic, \u201cHow long did they say this would last for?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He calmly replied, \u201cAs long as it takes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was six weeks before Vic was discharged from hospital and slowly made a full recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Health Problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next few years Vic had several health problems and handled them in the same calm, composed way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During these years, Vic stopped smoking his very strong non-tipped Senior Service cigarettes and also stopped drinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did find some pleasure in smoking the odd <em>Jamaican Woodbine.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Christmas at our small cottage in North Marston, Buckinghamshire, Vic and Lesley came over for a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My loverly elderly mother was sitting close to Vic in the living room as he lit a huge Joint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the smoke filled the air, my mother screamed, \u201cVic, your cigarette is on fire!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">New Year&#8217;s Eve<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One New Year&#8217;s Eve in the mid 70s we phoned to wish them both a happy New Year but there was no answer. The next day I asked Vic were you out celebrating. He said, \u201cNo, we were both in bed by 10.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I bullishly told him, that&#8217;s the last time that\u2019s going to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our parties were always great fun, everyone knew everyone else, as did Vic and Lesley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So every year after that they both spent New Year&#8217;s Eve with us, with the exception of 1988 when Vic arrived alone he said Lesley was feeling unwell. I had no idea this would the last New Year&#8217;s Eve we would ever spend together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The last Time I saw Vic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the 9 June 1989, I went to visit Vic at his home in Marlowe, he had just returned from a visit to the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had asked a good friend of mine in Nashville, <em>Nutty Walt<\/em> if he would look after Vic and show him around. Apparently Walt did a great job and lived up to his nickname.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whilst having a coffee and a full catch up about his trip, he asked if I would be a witness to his will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I asked, if all was OK and Vic explained it was just something on his &#8220;to do&#8221; list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We arranged to meet up for lunch in a few weeks time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next few weeks we spoke on the phone a few times and set the date Thursday 13th July to meet up for lunch in a pub we used to frequent in Denham village.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday the 10th Vic phoned me to confirm the time for Thursday and we spoke about VAT returns and the movie <em>The Three Amigos<\/em>, basically just general chit-chat, ending with &#8220;see you in Denham&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of the Worst Phone Calls Ever<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next evening on Tuesday 11th Lesley called me to say Vic had passed away that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stunned and upset, I don\u2019t remember to much about that call except I asked if he had had a heart attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lesley explained that Vic was told six weeks before that he only had a short time left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was furious with him that he never told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Very Sad Afternoon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Amersham Bucks on July 18th Vic Maile was cremated.
