Why, yes, it could!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nostromo was Englishman Kenny Denton, a musician, producer, and engineer who released singles under the pseudonym (if you\u2019re slow, <em>Nostromo<\/em> was the name of the besieged cargo ship in <em>Alien<\/em>). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other was the disco-fication of John Barry\u2019s <em>The Black Hole <\/em>theme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both are surprisingly effective and contemporary sounding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even though <em>Alien<\/em> apparently gained some play in clubs at the time (there\u2019s even a sample of the beast\u2019s dying squeal!), <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think <em>The Black Hole<\/em> is even better: lush and replete with quirky laser blast effects; and, unlike Meco\u2019s stab at the bleak and lovely Disney film, this one actually resembles Barry\u2019s score.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"> Review 2.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Kenny Denton&#8217;s space-themed alias has produced a number of science-fiction-themed disco covers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The name Nostromo was taken from the spaceship that appeared in the movie &#8220;Alien&#8221; (1979) directed by Ridley Scott. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Around The World In 80 Seconds <\/em>(The B side) is a cult work that was often played at LIFE FORCE.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The story behind Nostromo <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In mid 1979 my good friend Colin Hankins was the advertising director at \u201c20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox\u201d London. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colin invited me to a preview of a movie that 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Century was to about distribute called <em>Alien<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a relatively small budget movie and was the first major film project for the director Ridley Scott.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Due to the restriction of the budget the only named actor to appear in the movie was John Hurt, who was the first to be killed off in this haunted house scenario.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one knew before its release if this movie would be a success, but it certainly had all the hallmarks of reaching cult status.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alien-Program.jpeg?resize=1024%2C469&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4328\" style=\"width:838px;height:383px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alien-Program.jpeg?resize=1024%2C469&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alien-Program.jpeg?resize=300%2C138&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alien-Program.jpeg?resize=768%2C352&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Alien-Program.jpeg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>Alien Programme 1979<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colin\/20<sup>th<\/sup> Century offered me a small budget to produce an alternative version of the main theme for a commercial radio release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I jumped at the offer, but decided I would fund the project myself on the condition that 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century would give me their full co-operation, which they agreed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I then hired Dave Lawson, in my opinion the best music programmer around at that time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David had previously provided the synth sounds in the space bar scene in <em>Star Wars<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was a true master with this recently new and expanding technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As David hadn\u2019t seen the movie, I took a cassette of the John Williams theme to his small production room in his flat in North London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took about 3 \/4 hours to lay the basic format down, then a couple of hours to decide on the sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few days later we went into studio 2 at De Lane Lea Wembley for a 3-hour session and transferred the music to 24-track 2-inch tape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I then contacted Colin to give him an update and asked if it would be possible to have a few sound bites of dialogue of the actors to use in the track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All agreed except for <em>Sigourney Weaver<\/em>, whose agent demanded a ludicrous fee and a high percentage of the record and more credits than xxxxx<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With time restrictions due to the movie close to release and my budget dwindling, I decided to whisper and scream a few lines myself and add a sound effect of a cat meowing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This would be a dam site cheaper than Ms. Weaver and I feel a lot less trouble. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Colin kindly arranged a copy of the Alien sound that screamed over John Hurts face from the pod. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This would have been impossible to recreate and something from the Movie that didn&#8217;t required a  percentage or a credit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I finished the track and played it to my friend <em>Alan Sizer <\/em>who was the head of A &amp; R at Polydor records. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alan adored it and immediately offered a deal.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the same day I played the track to another friend <em>Robert lemon <\/em>who worked for Bronze records as head of promotion, he asked me not to take the Polydor deal until he played it to the owner of the company, <em>Gerry Bron.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although Bronze was mainly a heavy rock label, Gerry loved the track and  also loved the idea of an instrumental synth band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> He offered a deal with a lot less advance money, but the deal would include a guarantee of 2 more singles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also figured they didn\u2019t have as many acts to work on as Polydor, so the record would get more attention, so the deal was done.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having to come up with an artist name for the record and the contract, I decided to call the band <em>Nostromo <\/em>the name of the ship in the movie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bonze also paid \u00a31000 to 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century for the usage of a picture of the iconic Alien to be used on the single\u2019s front cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the movie due for release in less than 1O week\u2019s time became the enemy, I urgently needed a B-side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not having the time to write and record and mix something or the funds to pay David Lawson, I used an old B-side from a track I wrote and had released in 1975<em>.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it was a funk type feel I just gave it a more spacey mix and added a few simple synth lines and that became <em>Around The World In 80 Seconds.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"425\" height=\"397\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-19-at-15.31.05.jpeg?resize=425%2C397&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4329\" style=\"width:548px;height:512px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-19-at-15.31.05.jpeg?w=425&amp;ssl=1 425w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-19-at-15.31.05.jpeg?resize=300%2C280&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To help with the promotion of the record Bronze hired the <em>Empire Cinema Leicester Square <\/em>every Thursday afternoon for 6 weeks, before the official release of the movie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each Thursday, at midday in a small room in the theatre a buffet and drinks were served for a selected invited audience of DJ\u2019s and music press etc, which  was followed by a private preview of the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time the movie was on general release I could lip sink the entire movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the single didn&#8217;t sell in large volume, it did however receive some good radio play and excellent reviews, which <em>20<sup>th<\/sup> Century <\/em>were more than happy with.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we now know the movie went on to gross worldwide $106,285,522 and become, not just a cult movie but an all time classic <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lack of a chart entry didn&#8217;t deter Gerry Bron in the least, he still very much believed in the idea of the band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon after the Disney Movie <em>The Black Hole <\/em>became the next adventure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"374\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-19-at-15.57.39.jpeg?resize=720%2C374&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4330\" style=\"width:720px;height:374px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-19-at-15.57.39.jpeg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Screenshot-2022-03-19-at-15.57.39.jpeg?resize=300%2C156&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong>The Black Hole Single <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The format was pretty much the same except Dave Lawson\u2019s fee had escalated and we didn\u2019t hire the cinema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The B-side was derived in the same way using a previous old B Side, remixed in same spacey vibe this was called <em>Gom Jabbar<\/em>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, I mixed several versions of this track, so I had to give them different titles to differentiate the mixes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later listening back to some very old tapes I discovered my favourite mix turned out to be a mix called <em>Close Encounters of a Nostromo Kind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final <em>Nostromo r<\/em>ecording, was a hideous piece of music called, <em>Darth Vader&#8217;s Theme<\/em>&#8216; from the movie<em> The Empire Strikes Back<\/em>,  written by <em>John Williams<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"979\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3Empire-Strike-nack-.jpeg?resize=979%2C720&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4332\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3Empire-Strike-nack-.jpeg?w=979&amp;ssl=1 979w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3Empire-Strike-nack-.jpeg?resize=300%2C221&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.kennydenton.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/3Empire-Strike-nack-.jpeg?resize=768%2C565&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 979px) 100vw, 979px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But having to contractually deliver a third recording for <em>Bronze <\/em>and my relationship with Colin and <em>20<sup>th<\/sup> Century<\/em> I set about creating a track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David Lawson\u2019s fees had now reached astronomical proportions, so along with my dislike for the music I took a back seat and let David truly earn his money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">David&#8217;s headed invoice paperwork had a full keyboard across the top of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On paying his invoice I couldn&#8217;t resist returning a copy of his paperwork to him, with each note on the keyboard,  I wrote \u00a310 for C \u00a3 5 for a A and so on. Sharps were 50 pence dearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One full chord could add up to \u00a330 each time he played one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately David never saw the funny side of my humour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gerry Bron also insisted we use his brand new digital recording studio in his building to record the track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had always used De Lane lea at Wembley and had no idea how Gerry\u2019s new studio worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was very strange trying to produce a track that I had no input with the arrangement or the sounds, in a studio that I had no control over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact everyone in the room just stood there whilst the machines did everything. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was truly the end for me of the <em>Nostromo<\/em> project. Although I remained good friends with Gerry until his sad passing in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highlight of my involvement in this track was I was able to take our 6-year-old son to the premier of the movie <em>The Empire Strikes Back<\/em> and he saw all the actors who he only knew by their movie characters names. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am sure he was the only child in the audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the movie was over, Colin was at the bottom of the stairs of the theatre talking to various people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind him in the foyer were a huge line of <em>StormTroopers<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we arrived he asked our son,  if he would like to meet the <em>Stormtroopers. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speechless, Colin took his hand and took hm over to the line, I watched from a distance as they gave him several gifts including the most amazing Lightsaber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can&#8217;t thank Colin enough for that night and his wonderful friendship during this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although none of the <em>Nostromo <\/em>records sold in large volume, by today\u2019s sales we would have easily entered the top twenty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have read so many wonderful very kind comments over the years about these recordings, which I am so truly thankful for.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please Note<\/strong>: Recently discovered Nostromo recordings from the 90&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Nostrmo: The Theme From&quot;
