{"id":577,"date":"2021-07-23T12:05:55","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T11:05:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kennydenton.com\/stagingnew\/?p=577"},"modified":"2023-05-22T18:13:05","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T17:13:05","slug":"50000-and-a-cell-mate-named-bubba","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kennydenton.com\/?p=577","title":{"rendered":"Doug Sahm Nightmare Part 1 &#8211; A Bad Start"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Band &#8211; Sir Douglas Quintet <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place -Sweden &amp; San Francisco <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time &#8211; 1982 <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Album &#8211; Midnight Sun <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8220;You can always tell a Texan but you can&#8217;t tell him much.&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Sir Douglas Quintet<\/strong>, led by Doug Sahm, originated out of San Antonio Texas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Quintet\u2019s original roots of blues and soul mixed with Texas swing with a dash of doo wop, was integrated with Tex-Mex and Cajun styles and is considered to be a pioneering influence in the history of rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll music. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are best known for their 1965 hit <em>She&#8217;s About a Mover<\/em> which featured Augie Meyers\u2019s driving Vox Continental organ beat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My first meeting with Doug Sahm<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1982 I was under contract to Sonet Records, Sweden as an in-house producer for the company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was at that time I was first introduced to Doug Sahm at their offices in Liding\u00f6, just outside Stockholm. He looked a little like John Lennon wearing a cowboy hat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would often cross paths at gigs or at various Sonet Records gatherings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doug spoke like an unstoppable tide at a speed faster than you could listen; this was lucky for me as his conversation was mostly about himself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His vocabulary hailed from the late sixties with phrases like \u201cFar out man\u201d and \u201cHe\u2019s a groovy cat\u201d. He took little interest in me and the feeling was mutual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dag Haggvist, one of the MD\u2019s at Sonet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> Asked if I would produce an album with <em>The Sir Douglas Quintet<\/em>. I heard various stories about Doug in relation to him being hard to work with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having already recorded some absolute monsters in my career I couldn\u2019t see him being too difficult a challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recordings were to take place in San Francisco, somewhere I had always wanted to visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would also have the support of my good friend Augie Meyers, a long time member of SDQ. So how tough could it be? Little did I know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was to take $50,000  in cash, which I was to use to pay the studio, musicians hotel and any other bills that I incurred. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was aware that it was illegal to enter the USA with more than ten thousand dollars without declaring it but I wasn\u2019t carrying drugs or anything untoward so I figured it should be fine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arriving in Seattle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early December I left London for Seattle, where I would clear customs and take the internal flight to San Francisco. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before landing I filled out the standard USA entry form, when I got to the question \u201cAre you carrying more than $10,000?&#8221; I ticked the <em>No<\/em> box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After landing and clearing passport control, I was standing in the line at customs when my stomach started telling my whole body that taking this amount of money into the USA was not a good idea. My mind was trying to tell my stomach to hold on. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Getting caught in customs <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My turn came in the queue. The custom officer asked me the three main questions that were on the form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you have any fresh fruit?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo\u201d I said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHave you been on a farm in the last three weeks\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo\u201d I replied,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you carrying $10,000 or more?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking straight into my eyes she asked, \u201cSir could you please open your briefcase?\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As it opened she proceeded to delve inside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within seconds she pulled out two $10,000 packs, looking slightly aggressive she said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is this?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEr, well, that\u2019s $20,000&#8243;, I replied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She pressed a button under her desk and the loudest alarm bell I have ever heard rang throughout the building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I looked back to see everyone in the queue behind trying to see what I was carrying. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two bulky security guards appeared from nowhere and escorted me to a small office. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">$50,000 and a cell mate named Bubba<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On searching my briefcase they found the rest of the cash; they continued to search every inch of my suitcase asking, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you have any more cash?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo,&#8221; I sighed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These guys were seriously terrifying, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOk what\u2019s the money for?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I explained that it was for a recording session in San Francisco, interrupting me one of them said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s funny, on your entry form you ticked you\u2019re on holiday, you know you need a green card to work in our country?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was not going well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pair of them just kept flying questions at me. there was no good guy-bad guy routine like in the movies just bad guy-bad guy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On looking at my passport it showed that I had been entering the States regularly which gave them the idea that I was a money launderer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They then took me into a back room and proceeded to do things that I wouldn\u2019t even have let my wife do to me. You\u2019d think they\u2019d have taken me out for dinner first! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next three hours were petrifying, their interrogation was relentless. I had visions of being imprisoned for years, sharing a cell with a guy named Bubba. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally they accepted my story that I was just delivering the money on behalf of the record company to make sure all bills were paid correctly, so in theory I wasn\u2019t working. I was fined five thousand dollars and let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I caught the next flight to Frisco<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On arriving I went to pick up my rental car only to find the hire company had no knowledge of the record company reserving me a vehicle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was exhausted and frustrated after the day I\u2019d had so I told them to give the best car they had.
